THE SEARCH

Exploring the freedom of art - Alan Falls

Artists Statement
I have titled this exhibition "The Search"
It depicts my 'search' to find a process by which I can combine photography and digital imaging with acrylics mixed media and collage.
I want something that's more hands on than a print from a computer. Digital Photography and Computer imaging has endless possibilities. It's like being a kid in a lolly shop - all over again, but it lacks the 'hands-on-ness' I am after. It would be great if you could do it without a computer.
I think maybe Picasso had it with his collages or more recently David Hockney and his 'joiners'. I am currently playing around in this area

About the Artist
Alan first gained an interest in photography at the age of 13, when he and his elder brother Rex, took a series of photographs of each other using an old Zeiss folding camera. These pictures were then processed and contact printed by the boys in one of the bedrooms of their home (the only room in the house that could be made dark enough). The contact printer had been built, out of bits and pieces, by their eldest brother Graham.
On leaving school Al gained employment with a commercial photographic studio in Sydney. He subsequently returned to school to upgrade his education and then went back into advertising photography where he worked for a period of 6 years.
Since moving to the Sunshine Coast with his family, in 1974, Alan has been employed in a number of fields, including Photography. |

His re-involvement in the photographic profession inspired him to take on aDiploma of Photography in order to upgrade his skills in photography and the relatively new area of Digital Imaging. On graduating in 2005 his final folio "The Virtual Studio" received a distinction. He also received the Cooloola Sunshine Coast Institute of TAFE acquisition award for 2005 for his work, "Island Dreaming". Alan is currently exploring the combination of Photography, Digital Imaging and Collage techniques.
