Teewah
Artist: Michele Knightley:

In this exhibition I have tried to convey a glimpse of what I call the Teewah experience. Teewah is a small town on the Noosa North Shore with a unique vibe that can only be found in a beachside village.
Accessible only by four wheel drive vehicles at low tide you must first cross the Noosa River by vehicle ferry to begin the Teewah experience
After driving through wallum wetlands for a short time you then pass through a sandy access track out on to the beach. I always find this moment an uplifting experience where the power and beauty of nature confronts you. Depending on the weather the beach is always different but always beautiful.
Extending from Noosa Heads to Double Island Point, Teewah beach is was once known 40 mile beach, famous for its coloured sands and the shipwreck of the Cherry Venture. The small village of Teewah started life in the 1950’s as a tiny town dotted with fisherman’s cottages and holiday homes. It still retains some of this original charm although the 21st century has arrived in Teewah with the availability of electricity and the appearance of large modern homes sticking up strangely between the small modest fisherman’s shacks. The streets are named after fish species – tailor, mulloway, whiting, mackerel, swallowtail, stargazer – while the cottages bear such titles as ‘Mullet mansion’ ‘Heaven’ and ‘Reel ‘em inn’
Also included in this exhibition is a slide show of photographs taken by my mum Noelene Knightley and myself. We hope you will enjoy the Teewah experience as much as my family and I do.

Michele is an artist from Cootharaba who grew up in Noosa from an early age. After completing her schooling at Noosa High School, she began working as a Potter in Eumundi. Now working in the field of visual arts, Michele brings her interest in botany to her artwork, painting habitats and plant species of the Noosa area.
“Cooloola, part of the Great Sandy Region, is an amazing windsculpted wilderness. Its formation over the last 400 000 years has created a unique coastline with a rich diversity of local plant communities. I feel a strong connection with the wallum country that surrounds the Noosa River and extends east to the surf of the Pacific Ocean. Through my art, I aim to present viewers with the opportunity to become more familiar with the intimate details of the local landscape that mean so much to me.”
